how to care for an indian ring neck parrot in the uk

Species of the month

🦜 Species of the Month - July

Indian Ringneck Parakeet (Psittacula krameri manillensis)

July's feature goes to a bird with a reputation that precedes it: the Indian Ringneck. Striking, intelligent, and famously independent, the IRN is a species that attracts a lot of admirers.

Did you know?

Indian Ringnecks go through something owners call the "bluffing phase", typically between 4 months and 1 year, where a previously sweet bird can become nippy, unpredictable, and seemingly uninterested in you entirely. Many birds are rehomed during this phase.

📏 Size: Around 40 cm (16 inches), though a good portion of that is tail.

🎂 Lifespan: 25–30+ years with proper care. Another long-term commitment that deserves serious thought before taking one on.

🧠 Personality: Clever, curious, and very much their own bird. IRNs are capable talkers, often developing clear, well-pronounced vocabularies, but they engage on their own terms. They're not typically lap birds, and can be extremely noisy.

🌍 Native To: The Indian subcontinent and parts of Africa, adapting remarkably well to a wide range of environments, which is why feral populations now exist across the UK, Europe, and beyond.

🌿 Support Tip: IRNs need mental stimulation above almost anything else. A bored Ringneck will let you know about it. Foraging toys, rotation of enrichment, and regular interaction go a long way.
