Species of the month
We’re shining the spotlight on a parrot species each month, and for February it’s the Green-Cheeked Conure (Pyrrhura molinae) – a small but mighty parrot loved for its playful personality, deep green plumage, and that signature maroon tail.
Did you know?
Green-Cheeked Conures are often described as “big parrots in tiny bodies.” Despite their size, they are emotionally expressive, curious, and famously affectionate with the people they trust. They’re also quieter than many other conure species, which is why they’re often considered more suitable for households that can’t accommodate constant loud calls, though they still have plenty to say when excited.
📏 Size: Around 25–26 cm (10 inches) from beak to tail — compact, agile birds built for quick bursts of flight and nimble climbing rather than long-distance travel.
🎂 Lifespan: Typically 20–30 years in captivity with proper nutrition, enrichment, and veterinary care. While smaller than macaws, they are still a long-term commitment that spans decades, not years.
🧠 Special Traits: Highly intelligent, playful, and known for their love of interaction. Green-Cheeked Conures thrive on puzzle toys, shredding materials, and social engagement. They are excellent problem-solvers and often invent their own games. Without regular stimulation and companionship, they can develop attention-seeking behaviours such as nipping or excessive vocalising.
🌍 Native To: South America, particularly regions of Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay, and northern Argentina. In the wild, they inhabit forests, woodland edges, and savannah areas, travelling in small flocks and foraging for fruits, seeds, blossoms, and vegetation.
🌿 Support Tip: Because of their small size, Green-Cheeked Conures are sometimes underestimated. They still require a varied, nutrient-dense diet, daily out-of-cage time, and safe chewing and foraging opportunities. Their playful nature hides a sensitive emotional core; consistent routines, gentle handling, and positive reinforcement go a long way in building trust and preventing behavioural issues.
