African Grey Parrot Diet: The Complete Guide to Feeding for Health and Longevity
African Greys are known for their incredible intelligence, their sharp wit, and, of course, that voice that can mimic you a little too well. But to keep that brain bright and their feathers glossy, their diet needs to be spot on. They’re fussy eaters by nature, so the trick is to offer a routine that’s both nutritious and appealing, one that feels a little like their wild diet, but adapted to the comforts (and safety) of life with us.
What should an African Grey eat for breakfast?
Mornings are the perfect time for fresh food. I like to give mine a big, colourful “wet chop”, a mix of finely chopped fresh vegetables with a little fruit. Variety is everything here. African Greys thrive on leafy greens like kale and bok choy, brightly coloured veg like carrots, pumpkin, beetroot, and sweet potato, and crunchy favourites like peas and courgette. Fruit is best kept to small amounts and not every day, but when you do give it, go for the most nutritious, lower-sugar choices like berries, melon, or papaya. Or mix and match whatever safe fruits you have to hand, just make it exciting.
To take that morning chop to the next level, mix in sprouting seeds. Our Foraging Feast Sprouting Mix is perfect for this, it’s packed with nutrient-rich ingredients like adzuki beans, mung beans, chickpeas, lentils, sunflower seeds, quinoa, and more. Sprouts are fresh, living food, and they’re closer to what wild African Greys would find while foraging.
Can African Greys eat nuts?
Nuts can be offered as training treats or rewards throughout the day. Now, you might find your Grey turns their beak up at certain nuts, they’re famously picky. Macaws inhale them, but African Greys are naturally a bit more selective, probably because nuts aren’t as common in their wild habitats in Africa. Try a variety, almonds, walnuts, pistachios, and see what gets them excited.
What is the best evening meal for an African Grey parrot?
Evenings are a good time to switch things up with a dry offering. This is when I give mine Soothing Dry Mix alongside a high-quality seed blend. Soothing Seed Mix pairs beautifully with it, or if you want to really boost gut health, Happy Gut Seed Mix is ideal. The dry mix gives them something to crunch on, forage through and is full to the brim of nutrients and flavours, while the seeds provide healthy fats, protein, and variety. The combination of both is great for digestion, and lovely healthy parrot poops.
What do African Greys eat in the wild?
In the wild, African Greys spend their days flying long distances to find food, fruits, seeds, berries, leafy greens, and occasional nuts. They don’t eat one thing over and over; their health depends on diversity and changes with the seasons. The diet I’ve described mimics that variety while meeting their needs in a way that works in captivity. The products we make at The Aviary are designed to suit even the fussiest Greys, giving them a balance of nutrition and flavour that supports long-term health, strong feathers, and a sharp, happy mind.
Feeding an African Grey isn’t about finding one “magic” food. It’s about building a daily rhythm they enjoy and that gives them everything their body and mind need. A mix of fresh, sprouted, dry, and seeded foods will keep them thriving for decades, and keep that famous voice ringing out for years to come.
